Rampage

Jason and I did it! We did the Rampage at the RAC this morning.

Neither of us "trained". We just went with it. We both figured it would be the jump start that we needed to start getting a little more exercise in our life, and less sitting around. Unfortunately, the battery in our camera was dead, so no photos.

It all started well, we jogged for a bit, but then dropped back to walking. There were LOTS of hills to start with, so we both got winded a little quicker than I would have thought. Overall, there were 12 obstacles:

1. hills in the woods (with logs over the trail that we had to jump over)
2. Tunnels
3. Cargo Net
4. Web in the woods (bungees were strung through trees that we had to climb through)
5. Sand dunes
6. Tire flyer
7. Super skid (a downhill slip and slide)
8. Climbing over hay bales
9. Jumping over the hoods of a couple of cars
10. Barriers (hurdles)
11. Jumping over Fire
12. The Mud Pit

Other than Jason taking out another contestant at the bottom of the Super Skid, it went really well (I asked Jason to help me out of the mud pit, though)! We have done our first 5K, although the running was not my favorite part, I would do this kind of race again in a heartbeat. Jason handled it much better than I did, but he was so supportive and I am so glad he stayed with me.

Well, last week Kearstin went to the Hammond Ashley double bass camp for the first time. That meant that she had to stay in a dorm (no parents or sisters). I was so worried about her, but she proved to me just how strong of a spirit she is. She handled it very well, and I could not be more proud of her!

I see this camp being something she will be attending year after year. She made new friends and even learned a thing or two about her bass. Most importantly, she was able to be independent.

Bye Bye purple coat!

Kearstin has had her winter coat for a couple of years, and no matter what other coats we saw while out shopping she would not give it up. However while I was out with Kylee over the weekends, I saw this coat on sale and decided to get it without asking her opinion.

When I got home and gave it to her, she immediatly put it on. She has graciously consented to not wearing the purple coat any longer, but only if I use it to make her a new quilt!

I love that kid.

Kearstin has been playing the upright bass for a few months, and after many phone calls and referrals, we finally were able to find somebody to give her lessons (I'll call him E). Her first was last night. She had a great time, and E is a new high school graduate and excited to pass on his love of the instrument, so it seemed like a good match. He has taught about 6 kids over the past few years, and next year he is off to New York!

E started off by teaching her the correct form. Her orchestra teacher at school doesn't play a string instrument, so poor Kearstin was trying to figure it out on her own. She was doing pretty well, but with an expert to help her, I think she is going to go SO far with this. She is already asking for more music to play (other than what the school orchestra gives out).

When I met E, he looked really familiar. So last night, I pulled up some videos that I had taken of past orchestra concerts. Well it turns out that when E was in high school, he was guest at one of the concerts playing his bass. I had it on video, and Kearstin thought it was great. I think that was actually a big reason why she decided to switch to the bass. It also turns out that he plays for an orchestra that her current orchestra teacher and her past orchestra teacher are also a part of. AND, an ex coworker of mine also plays for that orchestra!

During the lesson, I waited in a separate room, and E's roommate (S) came to talk to me to help pass the time. After some talking, I found out that he works with another coworker's son's girlfriend.

So many connections, this must be the right choice for her!

It is so difficult to see your child dealing with something hard in life, and not be able to make it better. Kylee is trying to deal with the fact that she may not be in the same school as her friends next year, and she is trying to not let us see how hard it is. But the little comments, the sulking attitude, and the extreme highs and lows have made it all too clear that she is struggling.

I want to make it better, I want to tell her that we have solved everything and nothing in her life has to change. But I can't. I don't know that everything is going to turn out the way she wants.

And it sucks.

A whole weekend with NO commitments whatsoever! I can spend it all on doggy loving, house cleaning, or whateverIwanttodo.

I also found out that life doesn't always work the way that we want it to, but if you try hard enough you can find a path that does work well. Enough said about that.

I have all my tax stuff, so I may even work on taxes this weekend. Even though they won't get filed until mid-February thanks to new tax laws. But it is a step in the right direction, and we will get an idea of what we are getting back.

I really have nothing.

For the past (almost) month, I have really been doing a bunch of nothing. No school (yeah!!) for me has left a huge amount of free time. As crazy as it sounds, I have been trying to figure out what I want to do first. Play a video game, read a book, do a large puzzle, sew a quilt, figure out a work-out routine, make signs, decorate this house that we have lived in for over 3 years...I just don't know. I have been so deprived of free time for so long, that I am struggling to make the adjustment to have free evenings and lunch hours. There is so much that I have been wanting to do, that I just don't know where to start.

Not that we haven't been doing stuff. Spent time with Clint, Meaghan and the kids. It is always so nice to see them, we just don't do it often enough. Jason and I have gone for some walks, I have finally gotten around to making the loft beds for the youngest two girls. Kylee has the all-state choir concert in a few weeks, and Yukon is loving all the extra attention.

I am sure that I will work it all out in time.

I just hope that it is soon.

Growing up, my best memories always include a burl wood clock that my parents had hanging in the living room. It was rustic and all the snags and twists made interesting imaginary figures. The clock itself was in the shape of a kangaroo, so to me, it was the Kangaroo Clock.

Over the summer, I had told my parents that I loved the clock, and if they ever thought about getting rid of it, they had better ask me first. They laughed it off and said that they didn't realize how much I loved it.

Sometime in the fall, they had gone to a street fair and found a piece of burl wood. They finished it up and added the clock fixtures, and gave me my own burl wood clock!

Except mine looks like a beaver, but the thought and caring that went into it really does prove that my parents love me!

Every year, Santa comes around to our neighborhood to bring the kids candy canes and find out their Christmas wishes. The fire truck comes along with volunteers to sing carols and collect food items for the local food bank.

The first year we lived here, all three ran out and excitedly met Santa. The next couple of years, only two made it out the door. This year, we were down to one. Hopefully, this one will be just as excited for the next few years.

A little early this year, but we went and got our tree this weekend. We go to the same place every year, but it is getting a little harder to find the perfect one. I had a Clark Griswold moment, though, when I spotted our perfect little tree. All by itself, with a ray of sunlight shining down on it. We were in and out of the tree farm in less then 30 minutes, and the tree was up and decorated without a fuss. I hope the rest of the holidays are this simple!

This year, a lot has happened.

Kylee turned 13, Kearstin turned 11, and Kami turned 6.

Kami is in soccer, and loves it. She has a wonderful coach, and we anticipate a long standing relationship with this team. She has also started Kindergarten, and enjoys every second of that as well. She has many friends, and has made a wonderful transition.

Kearstin switched to the bass from the violin. It is a challenge, but she keeps plugging along. She is happy that we found out that she probably won't need braces for at least another year. Good news for her.

Kylee is in her last year of middle school. She is going to try soccer this coming year, and still does volleyball and basketball. She made All-State choir, so we will be spending a weekend in Bellevue in February. She also has her first official babysitting job.

Jason is working like a manaic, and I am almost done with school. All around there is a lot to be thankful for!

WINDY!!!

Jason and I took the two youngest to the drive in last night (Kylee is still in Chelan, we miss her!), and it was so windy!!!

We had the air mattress all pumped up in the back of the truck, covered with blankets and pillows, and all warm and cozy. Unfortunately, the air mattress didn't like all that, and went flat in about 15 minutes. So we sat on the hard truck bed for 3 movies. The wind was still very extreme, and my face feels like I got wind burn.

Cute movies, though. Toy Story 3, Nanny McPhee Returns, and Despicable Me.

I must be begging for a mental breakdown. I just signed up for two more classes. Since 18 credits costs the same as 12, I am essentially getting those two classes for free. Saves me $2600 in the long run. Just a few months of INSANITY. 6 classes, what was I thinking????

Hey, my last post was my 100th post...isn't that something special. :)

I woke up this morning thinking that I don't have anything that HAS to be done today. Yeah! But (there is always a but) then I remembered that we need to go get plants, a new shovel, and barbecue repair supplies, and be home by noon because some friends are coming over. Bummer, I was looking forward to doing NOTHING.

I have finally been able to work on a puzzle, since school had been taking up so much of my time. What do I start with? I 1500 piece deluxe. Should keep me busy for a week or two.

Kami wants to take Tap Dance lessons. Sure, we'll fit this in between swim lessons, soccer practice, work, school, violin for Kearstin, track for Kylee, and life in general. I think that the tap lessons will need to wait. I wish that there were more hours in a day, I hate telling any of the kids no when they ask to do something that I think they would really enjoy.

I was outside working in the yard yesterday, and our neighbor came over and told us he was going to mow our yard, so if we wouldn't mind, could we move the wheelbarrow for a few minutes! He was nice about it, and I guess now I can cross that off my list. :)

Poor Yukon, he is sooooo lonely. He follows me everywhere! He got to play with his brother yesterday, but it was too short, and I can tell that he misses having a playmate. Nothing we can do about that for a while. The next time we get a dog, it will be a puppy, and I DO NOT have time for that right now.

I need to figure out a new shoe storage technique. The kids have so many flip flops and other types of shoes, we have outgrown our shoe rack. Oh, well, I'll leave that for another day. For now they will stay piled up next to the door.

I am thinking of officially moving Kameryn in with Kearstin, then we can use that other bedroom as a guest room. Seems rational, but I am not sure I can fit all the girls' stuff in one room!

I was driving home Friday, and started wondering where we are going to put the Christmas tree this year, since we have a new entertainment system that is taking up the whole wall where we used to put it. I ended up missing a turn! I need to make sure that I don't drive on autopilot anymore, who knows where we could have ended up.

Back to puzzling until Jason wakes up, then bye bye relaxation.

Since I am on Spring Break, I thought it would be a wonderful time to get away from the computer for a week (except work of course). No emails, no blog, no web surfing at all.

I didn't make it.

~ Monday, I had to look up a recipe.
~ Tuesday, I needed to help a child with a school project.
~ And Wednesday, a 3 hour web meeting from **** (yes it was planned, but I forgot about it) because I thought that being on the DDP S&A Fee Committee would be a "good experience".

This week of being unplugged isn't going so well.

Next time I decide to take some time off, I am giving my power cord to Jason and making him hide it! (Notice I didn't say I was giving him my laptop). :)

For a while now, Jason and I have been talking about getting a really **good** camera. You know, the kind that can take awesome sports shots, and can be used to do portraits at home (no studio costs for me, thank you very much). Well, we finally did it.

AWESOME! So I take it out and start shooting pictures without reading the manual, and even without having a clue what I am doing, look at what this little baby can do:

Because it almost always is not as bad as I feared.

I have been putting off the homework from my programming class because I was concerned that I would be lost and not understand any of it. So I did all the work for my other classes, then decided that the house needed to be cleaned, then took the kids swimming, then read for a while, and finally sat down to do it.

Once I got the right program installed, I was done in a tenth of the time that the instructor indicated it would take us.

Either I am a programming genius, or he WAY overestimated the time needed.

All done for this week, maybe I'll work ahead.

School is really crazy right now. I feel like every free moment is spent doing homework. Well, homework or shuttling kids around. Jason has been working INSANE hours, and too closely resembles a zombie here lately because he is so tired.

Kylee is almost done with volleyball. She really improved from the start of the season, and actually enjoys it now. Her last game is Monday, then Tuesday is the first day of basketball.

Kearstin was moved up in her spelling class, at least she is doing class level work now. Smart kid, I just really wish she would apply herself more.

Kami...too excited about turning 5 next month. And still way too bossy!

That's all for now, back to homework. :(

Where does the time go...

Been busy, school is taking up a lot of time this semester. Jason worked 80 hours in 5 days, busy boy. For a few hours today, we had two dogs...but when the newcomer snapped at Kami, he had to go.

A couple of weekends ago, I saw Wicked, loved it. We also went to the Cougar game, hated it. It's easy to hate it though, when they lost so badly. Last weekend, the girls and I went camping with Clint, Caley, and Carson. The kids had a great time. It rained quite a bit, but it was still fairly warm out, and the tent worked really well.

Off to do more homework. Only 11 (blech) more weeks to go.

A long time ago, my mom told me that teenagers are stupid. Literally stupid. I always thought that she was being sarcastic or nasty, but really didn't believe that she was being literal. I mean, how could a smart kid suddenly loose any sense in their head for 6 years, and emerge at the end as an intelligent, well adjusted young adult?

Kylee isn't quite a teen, but I think she is entering that tunnel of ignorance that requires all common sense be left behind.

Kylee: Mom, I need sunscreen for the Great Wolf Lodge this weekend.

Me: blink, blink

Kylee: Really mom, do you know where the sunscreen is?

Me: Kylee, you do remember that it is an INDOOR waterpark, right?

Kylee: Oh, yeah.

She has been doing so well at taking care of the animals, that we decided to give in and let her get her own kitty.
